Ink painting, also known as suibokuga, is an artwork in which everything is depicted in black water ink. This painting style was introduced into Japan from China together with Zen Buddism, and perfected in the fifteenth century. As in many other Japanese arts and traditions, the deep-rooted preference for simplicity and subtlety is seen in ink painting. It is interested in the essence of the subject matter, usually mountains, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, plants, birds, animals, etc. Various shades of blsck and gray on the white background stimulates the imagination of the viewer more than real colors.
